The Mount Batur sunrise hike is one of the most popular activities in Bali and one of the most rewarding. You start in darkness, climbing a 1,717-metre active volcano by torchlight, and reach the summit just as the sky turns from black to orange to gold. Below you, a caldera lake glimmers. On clear mornings, Mount Agung rises above the cloud on the horizon. It takes about two hours to climb, the views last for as long as you’re willing to stay, and it’s genuinely one of those experiences that sticks with you long after the trip.
This guide covers everything you need to plan the hike: difficulty, cost, what to bring, which tour to book, and how to get there from Sanur. For other day trip options from your Bali base, our day trips from Sanur guide covers the full range.
Mount Batur: The Basics
Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active stratovolcano in the Kintamani highlands of Bangli regency, about 60km north of Sanur. It last erupted in 2000 and remains volcanically active fumaroles and warm ground near the summit are part of the experience. The sunrise hike is one of the most accessible volcano treks in Southeast Asia: no technical climbing, no altitude acclimatisation needed, and the path is well-defined throughout.
The hike is managed by PPPGB (Persatuan Pemandu Gunung Batur), the local guide association. A licensed guide is compulsory solo hiking is not permitted. This is enforced.
Difficulty and Fitness Level
The Mount Batur sunrise hike is moderate difficulty. The total distance is approximately 6km return, with an elevation gain of around 700 metres from the typical starting point at Toya Bungkah. The path is steep in places loose volcanic gravel and rocky sections require care but there are no technical passages or exposed ridges. Most reasonably fit adults can complete it without issue. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours for the ascent and 1.5 hours for the descent.

The Sunrise Hike: What to Expect

Night before and departure
Most operators pick up hikers from their accommodation between midnight and 2am for the drive to Toya Bungkah. From Sanur, the drive takes approximately 1.5 hours. You’ll meet your guide at the base, receive a torchlight, and begin the climb at around 3–4am. The darkness on the lower slopes is total this is part of what makes the summit arrival so dramatic.
The ascent
The trail rises through scrubby vegetation and lava fields in the first hour before the path opens onto the bare upper cone. The final section to the summit (1,717m) is the steepest. Guides set a relaxed pace most groups stop to rest every 20–30 minutes. The air at altitude is noticeably cooler than coastal Bali: at 3am, temperatures at the summit can drop to 12–15°C.
The summit
Arrival is timed for first light typically around 6am depending on season. The summit ridge offers 360-degree views: the caldera lake (Danau Batur) far below, Mount Agung on the eastern horizon, and on clear mornings, as far as Lombok’s Rinjani. Many guides bring ingredients for a simple breakfast cooked over volcanic steam vents near the top, a genuine highlight. Allow 45–60 minutes at the summit before descending.
The descent
The descent follows the same route and takes about 1.5 hours. The loose volcanic gravel can be harder on the knees coming down than going up trekking poles help significantly if you have them. Most groups are back at the base by 9–10am, in time for a late breakfast in Kintamani before the drive back.

Getting to Mount Batur from Sanur
Sanur to Toya Bungkah (the main starting point) is approximately 60km and takes 1.5 hours by car — one of the more straightforward drives in Bali, heading north through Ubud and into the Kintamani highlands.
