Grab/Gojek workable but limited

Grab and Gojek cover the Sanur-Ubud route but surge pricing is common in the morning. Expect IDR 80,000-150,000 one way. The limitation is that you will need to re-book for each leg of the day rather than having a driver on call — which adds friction at every stop. 7:00-7:30 AM Tegalalang Rice Terraces (first stop)

Arrive at Tegalalang at 7:00-7:30 AM and you will have the terraces nearly to yourself for 30-45 minutes. The light is extraordinary at this hour golden, raking across the terraced hillsides. By 9:00-9:30 AM the Instagram crowds arrive and the magic dissipates significantly. Entry: IDR 50,000-75,000 per person. Budget 1-1.5 hours here.

9:00-9:30 AM Tirta Empul Water Temple (if interested in temples)

15 minutes from Tegalalang. A large Hindu water temple with a sacred spring where Balinese Hindus perform ritual purification by immersing in the pool. One of the most genuinely sacred sites in Bali open to visitors. Sarong required (available to borrow). Entry IDR 50,000. Budget 45 minutes. Note: respectful behaviour is required this is an active place of worship.

10:30-11:30 AM Ubud Monkey Forest

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in the heart of Ubud centre 750+ Balinese long-tailed macaques living in a temple complex of ancient buildings and giant fig trees. Entry IDR 80,000 adults, IDR 60,000 children. Budget 1-1.5 hours. Genuinely impressive for first-time visitors. Key advice: do not hold food visibly, keep bags zipped, remove glasses if possible (the monkeys are attracted to them).

12:00-1:00 PM Ubud Market and Lunch

Pasar Ubud on the main intersection of Ubud centre sells Balinese crafts, textiles, souvenirs, and spices. The best time to shop is early morning (already done) or now — by mid-afternoon it becomes crowded and vendors become aggressive. Budget 45 minutes for the market.

Lunch: the streets around Jl. Monkey Forest and Jl. Hanoman have dozens of restaurants at every price point. For local food, look for the warungs set back from the main street — IDR 25,000-50,000 for nasi campur, significantly better value than the tourist-facing restaurants on the main strip.

1:30-3:30 PM Campuhan Ridge Walk (optional)

A 2km walk along a ridge with rice field views and a cool breeze one of the few genuinely pleasant walks in the Ubud area that does not require a tour. Free. Starts at Pura Gunung Lebah on Jl. Raya Campuhan, about 1km west of Ubud centre. The walk takes 45-60 minutes each way. Best in the early afternoon when the mid-morning heat has softened.

4:00 PM Return to Sanur

Leaving Ubud by 4:00 PM gets you back to Sanur by approximately 5:00-5:30 PM in time for a sunset on the promenade, dinner at Pasar Sindhu, or an evening swim in the villa pool. This is the ideal return window.

If you stay for the Kecak fire dance at Pura Dalem Ubud (starts approximately 7:30 PM), expect to return to Sanur by 9:30-10:00 PM through moderate traffic.

Yes for the right type of traveller. Ubud has more cooking class operators than any other area in Bali, ranging from IDR 200,000 to IDR 500,000 per person for a half-day session. The typical format: 7:30 AM market visit to buy ingredients, 9:00-11:00 AM cooking session, lunch eating what you cooked.

If you want to include a cooking class, it works best as the entire morning activity — replace Tegalalang with a 7:30 AM class, then do the Monkey Forest and market in the afternoon. Alternatively, do Tegalalang early (depart Sanur at 6:00 AM), then join an 11:00 AM class. Most operators can be booked via WhatsApp the evening before.

What to Skip on a Day Trip

Not everything in Ubud is worth the time on a day trip from Sanur. Here is the honest assessment of what to deprioritise:

• Bali Safari and Marine Park a full-day commitment on its own. Do not try to combine with Ubud.
• Kecak at Uluwatu on the same day Uluwatu is in the opposite direction from Sanur. Combining Ubud and Uluwatu in one day is technically possible but exhausting and involves significant traffic.
• Neka Art Museum / ARMA genuinely good art museums, but only if you have a specific interest in Balinese art. Not worth the time on a first Ubud visit when the terraces and Monkey Forest are waiting.
• Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) interesting historical site but crowds are significant and the experience is shorter than expected. Reserve for a return visit.
